Path to explore confucianism and Buddhism
1. Confucian culture [mid ~ late Joseon Period] : Goesi-ri Traditional Village (history and tradition of Joseon) ~ Illyang-ri Traditional Village (history and tradition)
2. Buddhism culture [Unified Silla ~ end of Goryeo Period] : Yugeumsa Temple (history of Unified Silla) ~ Buddhist Priest Naong Bansong Historic Site (people and history) ~ Jangyuksa Temple (people and history of Goryeo)
Yeongdeok is the home of Confucian culture. It is called 'little Andong' for considering etiquette and customs to be important. Illyang-ri Traditional Village and Goesi-ri Traditional Village were formed based on such spirits. I explore 'little Andong' which has the foundation of Confucian culture and see Yeongdeok in a new light.
Goesi-ri Traditional Village / Goesi-ri, Yeonghae-eup
The Goesi-ri Traditional Village possesses the spirits of the nobility. You can get a glimpse of the history, culture and traditions of the Joseon Period. At the village of the Yeongyang Nam clan, there are 14 cultural properties including the Mulsowa Confucian School and head residence of the Yeongyang Nam clan Goesi sect.
Illyang-ri Traditional Village / Illyang-ri, Changsu-myeon
The academics and virtues of scholars were preserved as tradition and many talented people were produced from this village. Illyang-ri Traditional Village has a tradition and spirit of 500 years.

Yeongdeok is also the place with the fruits of the Buddhist culture discovered by Buddhist priest Naong. I start at Yugeumsa Temple built in the Unified Silla Period and visit the Buddhist Priest Naong Bansong Historic Site and Jangyuksa Temple for a deeper understanding of Buddhist culture.
Yugeumsa Temple / Geumgok-ri, Byeonggok-myeon
The 3-story pagoda raised in the Unified Silla Period is the only remaining building. It tells the love story of Lady Janghwa and Crown Prince Maui.
Buddhist Priest Naong Bansong Historic Site / Singi-ri, Changsu-myeon
The site became famous because Buddhist priest Naong planted a Japanese red pine before entering Buddhism. It tells the life story of how Buddhist priest Naong was protected by the heavens and later became the King Uwang's advisor.
Jangyuksa Temple / Galcheon-ri, Changsu-myeon
Buddhist priest Naong built Jangyuksa Temple at Mt. Unseosan. Temple stay is available to forget all worries and be close to nature.
