Summary

Through the wish words and the inscription of golden repainting, it is revealed that it was made by the donation of the officials and people of the Yonghaebu District in 1395, 28th Hongmu (era name) Year and the gold was painted again in 1407, 5th Youngnak Year.


It is written on the record that "The Goddess of Mercy at the sanctum of Wijangsa Temple has been painted again." and it is estimated that it was originally enshrined at the Wijangsa Temple on the side of the well on Mt.Yongdusan in Yeonghae area.


The Geonchilbul Buddha statue is to have the mud interlining wrapped by the linen on which the mud powder is placed and then the interlining is removed.


The face is not distinct, but the face looks obstinate and the shape is a little bit bent.
Compared with the Buddha statue in the early of the 14th century, the decoration is emphasized more and more, the decoration is carved on the necklace, chest, sleeves of both collars, belly and legs.
The decoration of clothes worn inside droops down closely to the waist, which is an expression at the transition stage before the Age of Joseon when the decoration was completely disappeared.


The similar styles are expressed at the wooden statue of the Goddess of Mercy in the Pagyesa Temple (rebuilt in 1447.) and the gold and bronze seated statue of Unbuam Hermitage at the Eunhaesa Temple (around 15 century).
As both are located in the region of Gyeongsangbuk-do, the Bodhisattva statue of Jangnyuksa Temple, which is located at the transition point connecting from the end of Goryeo to the early of Joseon, has more important meaning in the history of sculpture.
