Experience the elegant spirits of a village of nobility.
Goesi-ri used to be a prosperous village. Some people were financially wealthy, but it was an exemplary village of academic and virtuous scholars. Fruits ripen on the trees in the yards. The academic knowledge is passed on, too.
The village embraces Mangilbong Peak and looks down at the Yeonghae Plain. There were many swamps around Songcheon and a gully north of the village, so it used to be called Hojichon, ho meaning gully and ji meaning land. Now, the lotus flowers in the village enhance the village''s atmosphere. The old houses stand facing southwest. I enter the village along the 200-year-old road. I see fermented soybean blocks hanging under the eaves. It''s like my hometown and my heart feels warm. Before it was called Yeongdeok, this place was Yeonghae. It had the largest plain in the east coast. Because nobility lived here, it was called ''little Andong''. It had to be reached via Ultijae from Hanyang, so it was mistaken as a place of exile. But judging from the influence of the Yeonghae governor, you can guess the high status of Yeonghae. Goesi-ri Village maintained its status and values for a long time. Several old houses including the head resident of the Goesi sect were restored as folk material and cultural properties. The stone wall path. You can see stone walls like this around the entire village. Goesi-ri reflects the residential culture of the nobility of the northern Gyeongbuk area. Hamchang Kim clan was one of the first people to settle here when it was called Hojichon. It is the home of Mokeun Lee Saek''s maternal relatives and also his birthplace.Around 1359, he changed the name of the village to Goesi because it looked similar to Huaishi, China, which he visited when he was studying abroad there. Several families lived here since, but the Yeongyang clan settled starting in 1630 and it became a clan village. 380 years have passed since then. Goesi-ri attracts people with unique features. At Goejeong, a house to experience traditional houses, there is a culture program every weekend from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can wear traditional clothes, jump see-saws, throw arrows in a barrel and learn etiquette. As such, the village makes an effort to preserve and teach tradition. Hojimal Festival Every fall, the Hojimal Festival is held. You can ride a palanquin, experience a traditional wedding or see a traditional house. There is also hiking on the Mokeun hiking trail. Cultural interpreters are available along with court dancing and songs of east coast fishermen. There are reenactments of traditional pastimes like jumping see-saws and throwing arrows in a barrel. You can also taste traditional tea like lotus tea.
