Being inebriated by the scent of Yeongdeok
A village with the academics and virtues of a scholar
In the past, this village didn't have as many fields and was full of houses. During the Japanese reign and the Korean War, traditional villages were the first to be destroyed to destroy the spirit of the people. Did we realize that too late?
To the north, the village is surrounded by Mt. Chilbosan (810m) and Mt. Deungunsan (786m). To the south are wide open fields. It's a perfect place for a village. It is called 'little Andong' for considering etiquette and customs to be important. Illyang-1-ri, Illyang-2-ri and Illyang-3-ri were villages of the nobility. Upon entering the village, a 500-year-old zelkova greets you. The huge tree burned down, but the Solanales grew into a thick tree. Even that was considered valuable and designated a protected tree in 1996. I enter Illyang-ri on a tractor driven by the chief of the village. I pass the garden of the Naragol Borimal Experience School and head for Illyang-2-ri. The village started to form 500 years ago before the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. Songcheon River flowed through the fields. Behind the village is Mt. Illyangdaesan. The vein of Mt. Deungunsan (786m) extended to form this mountain. It looks like a crane with both wings spread. That's why Illyang-ri is called Naraegol or Ikdong. It is a place where 8 head residences of 5 clans settled. Many talented people were produced from the village. Their descendants still excel in academics and politics.

Old houses over 500 years old were repaired and preserved and designated as cultural properties. The village was designated as a traditional village and information village. Tradition and the modern coexist here. According to an old book, eight head residences live in Illyang-ri. There were many scholars who were virtuous, filial and academic. It was a superior area. In 1615, the area enacted an autonomous rules for the first time. Bylaws were adjusted for the times in 1677 and 1927 and are still passed on.
Myth of Palpungjeong, Illyang-ri - The story of 8 evils
Palpungjeong is a patron saint of Illyang-ri village, but the myth about this zelkova is mysterious and fun. Long ago, eight evils called pallyeongsin lived in Illyang-ri. When the evils each rang a bell, someone in the village died. The newly appointed governor always died. Nobody wanted to be the governor of this village. But Yeokdong Wu Tak came as the new governor. Yeokdong knew about the Book of Changes and fought the evils with the energy of the universe. He suppressed the evils with an extract made with barley stems. He killed seven of the evils by drowning them in the ocean and had the eighth one guard Gwaneodae. Since then, there was peace in Illyang-ri. They started to plant barley to stop evils from thriving again. In the past, Illyang-ri, Changsu-myeon was Gyeongbuk's greatest barley production site.
