A scholars' village that warms your heart
Goesi-ri Traditional Village
200 years along a dirt path that reflects a yellow soil color. It is a banquet of old houses. Grandmother's house, old dust, lotus scent... Experience the thoughtful poems of a forgotten writer.
1km north toward the coast in Yeonghae-myeon is the Goesi-ri Traditional Village. At the entrance of the village, the lotus flowers and two old trees greet you. 200 years of tradition exist in the old houses lined up along the yellow soil path. This is the Goesi-ri Traditional Village. The earthen wall stretches along the village. Walking past each house, it feels like I'm back in the late Joseon Period. The provincial office and Yeongdeok-gun designated this place as a traditional village. It was restored to present the beauty of a well-preserved old village. Half of the houses are still lived in and designated as cultural properties. This is the village where the Yeongyang Nam clan lived for 400 years.

This place has a lot to do with Mokeun Lee Saek, one of the three loyal servants of Goryeo along with Yaeun and Poeun. In 1359, after studying in Yuan, Mokeun Lee Saek returned to his hometown here for a while. It was called Hojichon at the time, but he called it Goesi because it was similar to Huaishi, China. Since Lee Saek's maternal family came here, several clans lived here. Since 1630, the Yeongyang clan settled here and it has been 380 years since.

The structure of the houses have the original form of nobility in the Yeongnam area during the late Joseon Period. They are preserving tradition, culture and etiquette. The 300-year-old head residence of the Goesi sect of the Yeongam Nam clan is located in the center of the village. In addition, there are fourteen cultural properties including Daenamdaek, Yeongeun house, Mulsowa Confucian School and pavilions. It is a village full of cultural properties. The Mokeun Lee Saek Memorial and other traditional houses naturally blend in. The village of nobility was well preserved. It holds a rare value.

The Goesi sect of the Yeongyang Nam clan started with Nam Duwon. His oldest son, Bungik, passed the national exam and held a high position. Since then, many scholars were produced. There were independence fighters, too. An exemplary and traditional clan village. This is the Goesi-ri Traditional Village.
Footsteps into history - Mokeun Lee Saek Memorial and Monument for Mokeun and His Father Gajeong
On a hill behind the village is the Mokeun Lee Saek Memorial which opened in June, 2006, a statue and a pavilion which give a glimpse of his life and thoughts. A loyal servant of the Goryeo Period, a scholar of humanities, a prime minister, the loyalty of not serving two kings, etc. These are all descriptions of Mokeun Lee Saek. I think about life and meditate amidst his traces at his birthplace.
Hojimal Festival
Every fall, the Yeongdeok Culture Center hosts the Hojimal Festival. You can ride a palanquin, experience a traditional wedding or see a traditional house. There is also hiking on the Mokeun hiking trail. It is the greatest event of Goesi-ri Village. It is held every year at the end of September or early October. If you like, you can spend a night in one of the old houses.
