Summary
Ocheon Pottery is...
There is a record in the『Geographic Section of the Veritable Record of King Sejong』 that there were pottery kilns in Seongsan-ri, Yeongdeok-hyeon, from which we can learn that the pottery of Yeongdeok was very renowned since long time ago. Ocheon pottery uses clays at the hill leading to Yulgok-ri, Jipum-myeon, Yeongdeok-gun, which is making the highest quality pottery by using optimum materials. However, the traditional art of making pottery is barely being handed down by the potter Baek Gwang-hun (53), an intangible cultural asset of Gyeongsangbuk-do. Pottery lost its footing when our society was industrializing in all areas and the plastic boom began since the 1960’s. However, it was that time when his life of 40 years as a potter illuminated. Throughout the total course of making pottery, he stuck to the conventional method, which increased the solidness of final products, and achieved close to a 100% success rate. Such environment friendliness and superior quality are widely acknowledged, and there has recently been a rush of orders. Firm craftsmanship of the potter to make potteries lasting for more than a thousand years is the strength of maintaining the fame of Ocheon Pottery
