Summary
Byeonggok-myeon is renowned as an area where delicious Byeonggok pears have been produced from about 100 years ago. They call it ‘ggulbae (honey pear)’, as it is sweet and refreshing thanks to the huge daily temperature range and rich sunshine. As its sugar content is far higher than other pears, its quality is recognized nationwide by winning awards of excellence in the national agricultural product contest. 120 households produce more than 800 tons of pears yearly from some 50ha farms. Byeonggok pears protect the lungs and kidneys, relieve fever, and stop coughing. Furthermore, they excrete carcinogenic substance from the body. They are effective in relieving constipation, and are good as a dietary food. It is also useful for stopping the hiccups. If you purchase pears after December, their tastes go away just as pithiness of radishes occurs if not stored in the refrigerator. To prevent loss of taste, keep them in the refrigerator at a temperature between -1℃~2℃ after wrapping them up with plastic upon purchasing them.
